Call for Papers

Volume 5 Manuscripts Due by or before August 20

Deeper Learning Journal of Practice welcomes your potential article.

Explain how you implement a strategy with structures and scaffolds that supports two or more of the following deeper learning outcomes:

 Thinking carefully/critically and creatively to help solve a challenge
 Acquiring and being able to use knowledge
 Working collaboratively and independently
Communicating effectively

Social-emotional competencies
Learning and living self-agency

Educators who work with general, special, or other populations, at any level, P-20, describe a teaching practice you use to support students’ deeper learning.

Supervisors, administrators, teacher leaders, instructional coaches, and others who work with educators describe a practice you use to support educators’ deeper professional learning.

Teachers, supervisors, administrators and others describe a system-wide structure or approach that provides support for students’ or educators’ deeper learning.

If you have conducted action research to assess your implementation of deeper learning, detail how you implement the approach, your action research findings regarding your implementation, and how you will enhance implementation of it.

Submission Requirements

Detailed Description: This is the main section, approximately 2/3 – 3/4 of an article. Writing in the first person or first person plural, painting a picture with words, detail how you implement the approach, including with structures and scaffolds.

When detailing an approach, structure or scaffold, with it include reference to research related to this scaffold, structure, or approach. (If the research finding is not aligned with your observations that is fine, state the discrepancy.)

– State specific deeper learning outcomes rather than the phrase “deeper learning.”

Manuscripts can include a critique of the theory or research conclusions of others. Outline the theory/research conclusions, detail your related practices – and how your practices and reflections demonstrate the premise of the research conclusions or theory does not hold true for your practices. Include your suggestions for how the theory or research conclusions could be strengthened or changed.

Explain how what you provide supports a specific deeper learning outcome. Then, do the same with a second deeper learning outcome. Include evidence of progress on each of the stated deeper learning outcomes, whether through empirical research (artifacts, surveys, observations, checklists, rubrics, assessments, quizzes, tests, etc) or conceptual research.

Reflect on the approach. For example, what factors about students you teach or educators you support, your teaching values and style, research, or other factors led you to try this approach? Has the approach evolved over time? What additional structures and/or scaffolds could you add to make the learning stronger? What advice do you have for an educator who wants to try the approach/strategy/activity?

Manuscripts should be clearly written. 

Double spaced, upper right hand corner numbered pages, 12 point, Arial font. Indent paragraphs, five spaces.
Maximum 750-1200 words for initial submission. Writers whose manuscripts DLJP hopes to publish, often are asked to submit additional details.
– Do not put diagrams nor text, into text boxes. Diagrams, charts, etc. are best sent as photos. (Possible graphics are not needed for initial submission, but can be sent.)

Use regular black font. No bullets, no bolding, nor other special formatting.

Submitting Manuscripts for Review

Submissions are reviewed with a double blind review process.

Send two Microsoft Word documents attached to an email:
Document One: Author or Authors’ Page –  name(s), work role(s), organization(s), address(es), phone number(s), e-mail address(es), and submission title (but not the manuscript). For the file title use the author or lead author’s last name.

Document Two: Manuscript without the author’s name nor identifying information. For the file name use the beginning words of the manuscript’s title.

Begin the manuscript with its title and one-two sentence abstract that clearly represents the focus of the manuscript and ties it to one (or more) of the deeper learning outcomes listed above.

– Style requirements of Deeper Learning Journal of Practice may require substantial final editing of submissions.

Book Reviews


DLJP reviews are on books that are useful in forwarding one or more deeper learning outcomes. State specific outcome(s) the book’s content helps to forward and for whom, in what ways its content forwards the outcomes, who would appreciate the book, and something about the author. At the top of your review, put the book’s publication information.
